Did you know that..?
..since its creation in 1997, Guyra Paraguay has carried out more 350 biodiversity conservation and sustainable development actions? Here are just a few of them that we’d like to share with you:
- 1) With the support of the Paraguay’s general population, the Bare-throated Bellbird was declared Paraguay’s National Bird.
- 2) We have agreements with over 150 communities and community leaders, forming and supporting local conservation groups, such as the Eco Club Pantanal Paraguayo and their community radio station in Bahía Negra, the Kue Tuvy indigenous community, San Rafael Environmental Promoters, Eco-Ayolas, and local birdwatching groups.
- 3) We have trained more than 300 young conservation professionals.
- 4) In 2007, we were honored by the daily Última Hora Journal as "Protagonists of Hope" for our conservation and development work over the course of more than 10 years.
- 5) Through field trips covering all areas of the country, we have scientific information from more than 700 sites, with more than 125,000 new records for Paraguay’s 1,540 documented vertebrate species.
- 6) Our technical team and birdwatching members have traveled more than 950,000 kilometers in Paraguay, equivalent to 23,749 trips around the world or 2.5 trips to the moon.
- 7) To date, we have acquired more than 24,000 hectares in different regions, all dedicated to their conservation in perpetuity. Along with the SEAM and the Municipality of Asunción, we are supporting the designation of Asunción Bay as a national reserve.
- 8) Fifty-seven Important Bird Areas (IBAs) have been identified and recognized on a global level.
- 9) We continually study Paraguay's 714 bird species, identifying 80 threatened species, and we also protect 500 species in Guyra's private reserves. We have published more than 20 books about Paraguay's biodiversity and conservation, amongst them the first "Paraguay Bird Guide".
- 10) Guyra Paraguay works to protect the 94 migratory bird species that utilize Paraguay as a stopover place, coming from as far away as Alaska and Tierra del Fuego.
- 11) We have re-evaluated the more than the 150 invasive species that affect Paraguay’s biodiversity and cause economic and environmental damage.
- 12) We actively monitor land use throughout the country, and provide updated information about deforestation, desertification, flooding, and wildfires.
- 13) Our institution works with more than 100 small agriculturists, who produce more than 500 tons of organically-grown products that generate incomes 20% higher than non-organic products. These producers have restored more than 100 farms by planting trees used by both farmers and biodiversity.
- 14) En la RIn San Rafael alone, we are avoiding the emission of more than four million tons of carbon into the atmosphere, and have planted more than 50,000 native trees, utilizing local resources to restore the Atlantic Forest in our areas of the reserve.
- 15) We support the protection of 1,000,000 hectares in the Alto Chaco, habitat for large South American vertebrates like the Jaguar, Tapir, Giant River Otter, Guanaco, Chacoan Peccary, and the Giant Armadillo.
- 16) Thanks to Guyra Paraguay’s training in Geographic Information System technology, the municipality of Alto Verá was able to obtain royalties funds from Yacyretá Binational.
- 17) Through rural development and forest conservation projects, we were the first organization to offer local training for combating climate change.
- 18) We are the only organization actively studying Paraguay’s grasslands, working to conserve them with the support of the agricultural sector.
- 19) We are a part of the Group on Earth Observations, an international group looking to define the world's ecosystems.
- 20) We are one of the most active partners in BirdLife International and World Land Trust, developing and facilitating regional projects in the Americas and the rest of the world.
